This week marks the beginning of one of the most fun and enjoyable weeks in the wine industry and, no, it’s not the ever earlier start of Christmas Shopping (that’s next week!), this week is all about… Beaujolais Nouveau! Yes, this Thursday is Beaujolais Nouveau Day!
Starting out life as a simple and fruity young red for vineyard workers to drink straight after harvest, Beaujolais Nouveau is a red wine made from Gamay grapes produced in the Beaujolais region of France. It is the most popular vin de primeur, fermented for just a few weeks before being released for sale on the third Thursday of November. The idea of ‘Beaujolais Nouveau’ was really brought to life by Georges Duboeuf in the 70’s. It went through its heyday in the 80’s and 90’s with the iconic ‘Beaujolais Run’ with car enthusiasts and playboys racing to be the first to pick up the Nouveau and dash back to the UK. Since then it has gone through a slight decline in popularity. But no more!
At The Whalley Wine Shop we have always been big fans of Beaujolais in all its forms and the Nouveau is no different. What’s not to like?! It’s a fun, fruity, low tannin, low alcohol red wine that suits loads of casual foods and you can enjoy it slightly chilled. Going into winter it is a perfect light red to open at the end of a long day and quaff a glass or two. Not complicated, nothing to think about, just pure joyful drinking.
But there’s a serious side too. We hope that by getting involved in the tradition of the ‘Beaujolais Nouveau’ day you might also taste, enjoy and ultimately fall in love with some of the superb, complex and serious wines that do come out of the Beaujolais region. The fabulous ‘Cru’ Wines from names you might recognise….Fleurie, Brouilly, Moulin e Vent, Morgon and others (nine in total, worth learning for the next pub quiz!). It is also worth noting that the 2017 Vintage is being billed as one of the best in recent years. Despite serious problems with hail damage the wines that were produced should be excellent quality. Why not come down on Thursday 16th of November, pick up a bottle of the Beaujolais Nouveau and become one of the first to find out!
We have 2 different Beaujolais Nouveau available and unlike most wines we can’t tell you exactly what they taste like – we get our first taste of them on Thursday just like everyone else!
