This Thursday is Beaujolais Nouveau Day!

This week marks the beginning of one of the most fun and enjoyable weeks in the wine industry and, no, it’s not the ever earlier start of Christmas Shopping (that’s next week!), this week is all about… Beaujolais Nouveau! Yes, this Thursday is Beaujolais Nouveau Day!
Starting out life as a simple and fruity young red for vineyard workers to drink straight after harvest, Beaujolais Nouveau is a red wine made from Gamay grapes produced in the Beaujolais region of France. It is the most popular vin de primeur, fermented for just a few weeks before being released for sale on the third Thursday of November. The idea of ‘Beaujolais Nouveau’ was really brought to life by Georges Duboeuf in the 70’s. It went through its heyday in the 80’s and 90’s with the iconic ‘Beaujolais Run’ with car enthusiasts and playboys racing to be the first to pick up the Nouveau and dash back to the UK. Since then it has gone through a slight decline in popularity. But no more!
At The Whalley Wine Shop we have always been big fans of Beaujolais in all its forms and the Nouveau is no different. What’s not to like?! It’s a fun, fruity, low tannin, low alcohol red wine that suits loads of casual foods and you can enjoy it slightly chilled. Going into winter it is a perfect light red to open at the end of a long day and quaff a glass or two. Not complicated, nothing to think about, just pure joyful drinking.
But there’s a serious side too. We hope that by getting involved in the tradition of the ‘Beaujolais Nouveau’ day you might also taste, enjoy and ultimately fall in love with some of the superb, complex and serious wines that do come out of the Beaujolais region. The fabulous ‘Cru’ Wines from names you might recognise….Fleurie, Brouilly, Moulin e Vent, Morgon and others (nine in total, worth learning for the next pub quiz!). It is also worth noting that the 2017 Vintage is being billed as one of the best in recent years. Despite serious problems with hail damage the wines that were produced should be excellent quality. Why not come down on Thursday 16th of November, pick up a bottle of the Beaujolais Nouveau and become one of the first to find out!
Our offer:

Three Exceptional Fine Wine Recommendations

If you are fans of Amarone, Sauvignon Blanc or Rioja, read on, we have sensational offers on 3 world class wines.

1. The Calcarole Amarone from Guerrieri Rizzardi.

Recently Tom was lucky enough to visit top Italian producer the Guerrieri-Rizzardi family (pictured above) on the shores of Lake Garda at Bardalino. Formed in 1913 by the marriage of two historic Veronese familes the Guerrieri family from Bardalino and the Rizzardi family from Valpolicella, they produce a range of wines including Soave, Bardolino, Valpolicella and Amarone. (Read more about the family and the wines here: )

One wine stood out from all the others and it is no surprise. The Calcarole Amarone is legendary having achieved the ‘Tre Bicchieri’ or ‘3 Glasses’, the highest rating in ‘Gamberro Rosso’ Italy’s premier wine guide, 10 times overall!. Having tasted multiple vintages on the trip (it’s a hard life sometimes!) the 2011 was the wine that most impressed. This vintage achieved the highest rating in the 2017 guide and was also rated by Decanter Magazine, the UK’s top wine magazine, as the 3rd best out of 166 Amarones tasted.

This is what Tom said about it….“The nose is lovely, vibrant and delicate yet with an understated power. There is a sweet, lifted floral note that is undeniably pretty. The palate is very concentrated with lashings of dark fruit and a coiled power. The palate shows nice black cherry character to start with faint hints of coffee bean and dark chocolate underneath. The tannins are chewy and again the concentration of the wine is intense. Very enjoyable now but will be superb in 2-5 years. Will easily last 10 years.”

We are highly recommending this wine as one to buy now and lay down to enjoy in the future, so we are offering an exceptional deal if you would like to order a case. The Calcarole Amarone is superb and well worth the investment. The normal price is £61.99 a bottle however we are offering a case of 6 bottles for £300 (£50 a bottle) which is a saving of nearly £72. This is a fantastic opportunity to acquire a case of wine, (which is sure to run out in a few months), that will give you enormous enjoyment over the next few years . If you are interested please reply and we’ll be in touch to arrange payment and delivery.

2. Auntsfield Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand.

The Auntsfield Sauvignon is made by brothers Ben and Luc on the family vineyards outside of Blenheim. The wine has always been a shop favourite but the 2016 vintage recently scooped a coveted‘Exceptional’ rating in a Decanter Magazine Blind Tasting. It is a beautiful wine and has since sold out worldwide, however we have just managed to secure some of the last remaining UK stock. The wine is normally priced at £13.99 a bottle however we would like to offer it at £75 for 6 bottles – only £12.50 a bottle – a saving of nearly £9. Don’t delay, get your hands on this exceptional Sauvignon now because there is no more left in the country!

3. La Rioja Alta’s Vina Ardanza Reserva.

We are celebrating the 75th Anniversary of La Rioja Alta with a bunch of activity in the shop. The highlight is that the Vina Ardanza 2008 Reserva Rioja is available to enjoy ‘By the Glass’ all weekend at only £5 a 125ml glass! If you love your Rioja, then rock on down to the shop and grab a glass with us this weekend.
