The King’s Ginger is a delicious liqueur specifically formulated by Berry Bros. in 1903 for King Edward VII. This rich and zesty tipple was commissioned by the Royal Physician to stimulate and revive His Majesty whilst exposed to the elements during morning rides in his new horseless carriage – a Daimler.
It has been appreciated by bon viveurs, sporting gentlemen and high-spirited ladies ever since!
The King’s Ginger is a high-strength liqueur (41%) created by the careful maceration of ginger root, enlivened by the judicious addition of citrus in the form of lemon oil for an unexpectedly fresh lift. It’s appearance is seductively golden. On the nose an instantly warming aroma of ginger, zesty lemon, sherbet and golden syrup. On the palate an initial sweetness followed by a bite of ginger and lemon tart. A deliciously satisfying and warming mouthfeel, with a lingering and extremely long lasting finish.
The King’s Ginger is available now at The Whalley Wine Shop for just £23.99.
We are delighted to be holding our first ‘meet the producer’ wine tasting of 2014, and it’s a pretty special one too.
We are really proud to announce that Andrew Nielsen from the Le Grappin Estate in Beaune, Burgundy, is going to be showing his wines from the 2011 and 2012 vintages. The tasting is in The Great Hall at Whalley Abbey at 7.15pm on Tuesday 25th Feb and is a great opportunity to taste some fabulous Burgundies.
Andrew’s reputation is flourishing! Tim Atkin MW, from Three Wine Men, has declared Andrew Nielsen as one of his 25 winemakers to watch, scoring his Beaune Premier Cru White and Red 94/100 and 93/100 respectively. Some of you may know that Matt spent a week, last October, with Andrew helping with the 2013 vintage and Matt can vouch first hand for Andrews passion and dedication for his wine, something you’ll be able to taste for yourself. Andrew Nielsen is an Australian making wine in France and is absolutely flying at the moment, you’ll get the chance to chat with him after the tasting as well. There are only 24 places available on this tasting and they are priced at £20 each, excellent value given the quality of the wines you will be tasting.
You will enjoy a glass of Champagne on arrival, 5 wines from Burgundy (3 white, 2 red) and a selection of cheeses from Cheesie Tchaikowsky. The wines are….
Le Grappin Savigny les Beaune Blanc 2011

This is a tasting for those who have a love of the wines from Burgundy as this is a fantastic opportunity to talk with and discuss the region with a hands on winemaker. These are superb wines made in very small quantities and only available from us and one outlet in London. This is an excellent opportunity to taste wines which are great now and to buy wines to lay down for the future.
