It’s Chile v The Rest in our by the glass dispenser this month.

We continue Chile month with a CHILE v THE REST tasting experience in our By The Glass Dispenser. If you’d like to see how a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc fares against a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, without buying a bottle of each, then pop in to the shop and try  a sample of each. The same goes for Chardonnay where we’re pitting a Chilean Chardonnay against an Aussie Chardonnay. In the reds we have a Chilean Pinot Noir against a Burgundy, and the great Don Maximiano Bordeaux from Chile against Frans K Smits South African Bordeaux blend. Here are the details of the wines…..

Urlar, Organic Sauvignon Blanc 2012 Gladstone, New Zealand. (14%)
Zesty gooseberry, capsicum and lime flavours with a hint of passionfruit. While it remains a distinctively New Zealand sauvignon blanc the palate is full with great weight, length and texture due to a portion of the wine being fermented in aged oak barrels.

25ml 50p                75ml £1.50                125ml £2.50      £12.45 per bottle

Valdivieso Wild Fermented Sauvignon Blanc 2010– From the cooler climate of the Leyda Valley, this allows for a much slower growing and ripening season. Good aromas of lemon, vanilla and a little herbiness. On the palate there is a pleasant creamy texture, with good acidity and flavours of apple and melon with a little spice from the 6 months spent in French oak barrels. There is also a little mineral note at the finish.

60p for 25ml, £1.80 for 75ml, £3.00 for 125ml. £14.75 per bottle

Fraser Gallop Chardonnay Australia 2011
A delicate aroma of wet slate, white fruit and citrus flowers leads to a generous yet wonderfully elegant palate marked by pear and grapefruit flavours. Bright, pure, but sumptuous at the same time.           25ml 80p                75ml £2.40               125ml £4.00              £17.95 per bottle

Aconcagua Costa Wild Ferment Chardonnay Chile 2011
A pale yellow colour with greenish tints, this wine offers elegant fresh tropical fruit notes with touches of quince and honey that evolve into white floral notes accompanied by a hint of truffle. The fruit re-emerges on the palate, accompanied by a subtle minerality that adds complexity, elegance.

25ml 70p                  75ml £2.10                125ml £3.50                  £15.95 per bottle

Heru, Pinot Noir, Chile. 2009
Deep ruby red with violet highlights. The nose opens with red berries such as strawberries, raspberries and morello cherries. On the palate, it boasts juicy red fruit, a crunchy acidity with round tannins sustained on a base of fine, elegant French Oak.

90p for 25 ml    £2.70 for 75ml     £4.50 for 125 ml    £21.95 for a bottle

Louis Jadot “Clos De Ursules” Pinot Noir Burgundy France. 2007
Lots of red fruit character on the nose, strawberries, cherries and sour raspberries. On the palate the fruits really show first, then after a short time more savoury flavours are evident, like white pepper and “turned soil”. Great length and a nice mineral finish.

25ml £1.60                75ml £4.80               125ml £8                  £39.95 per bottle

Frans K Smit, Bordeaux Blend, South Africa. 2005
Abundant aromas of blackcurrant, cherry and banana that present on the palate. Complex finish of floral flavours, there’s hints of liquorice and mocha coffee, some soft lingering tannins that speak of longevity

£2.20 for 25ml,    £6.60 for 75ml,      £11.00 for 125ml  £54.95 per bottle

Don Maximiano Bordeaux Blend Chile. 2007
Bags of cherries, chocolate, blueberries and truffles on the nose with subtle hints of cedarwood and black pepper. These are followed through on the palate with extra hints of clove and cinnamon. There is lots af fresh acidity, a good sign for further bottle age development.

25ml £2.20                75ml  £6.60               125ml £11     £54.95 per bottle

It’s Chile Month In-store!

If it’s starting to feel chilly outside then come into The Whalley Wine Shop where it’s definitely feeling very Chile inside….as it’s Chile month in the shop!

Did you know that 80% of Chile is made up of mountains, yet the Atacama Desert is the driest desert in the world! There are also over 450 active Volcanoes in Chile! As for their wine, a lot of ‘Merlot’ sold in Chile in the 60’s and 70’s was actually mistakenly made from the very similar looking Carmenere grape. Carmenere is now one of Chiles top red grapes. And Chile is one of the few wine producing countries in the world NOT affected by the Phyloxera Louse which destroyed the majority of European vineyards in the 19th Century. One thing’s for sure, Chile is a wonderful wine producer.

To launch Chile month we have a fabulous Sauvignon Blanc and a fabulous Merlot at fabulous prices…..
